Ah, combat boots. They began as work and military shoes meant for function way back when and have since evolved into the ultimate way to pull off any look with an added edge. The boots can even give a polished outfit some grunge because they are sleeker than sneakers but far less put together than heels and that’s the point. From their humble grassroots beginnings to the bubbled over trend in the ’90s to now, the military-inspired shoes have enjoyed quite the fashion reboot.
How’s this for a full circle moment? Marc Jacobs was swiftly rejected by much of the fashion industry after he sent models like Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss strutting down the runway in combat boots for a 1993 Perry Ellis show. That ill-received grunge fashion show cost Jacobs his job. On November 15, 2018, he released 40 exact looks from that iconic collection, now called Redux Grunge. One look at the nostalgic re-release collection filled with plaids, knits and Dr. Martens shows just how trendy it actually was — and still is.
Beyond the Jacobs release, this style of boot has made its way to brands at every price point — including beloved high-end labels like Proenza Schouler, Balmain and Moncler. This spring and summer, combat boots were the most popular festival season shoe trend amongst some of our favorite supermodels.
In other words, fashion has decided: Combat boots are here to stay and as cool as they ever were.
At this point, every closet should have at least one pair of military boots on the shoe rack. They are multi-seasonal shoes perfect for the inevitable days when heels are out of the question but sneakers feel too casual for the occasion. The Shop With Us team spotted a pair of on-sale combat boots that are just grungy enough to give any look a little edge. Still, they aren’t so “military” that they aggravate a softer look.

We love that these BP. Remi Zip Combat Booties have the classic lace-up style and a shaft that hits just above the ankle. This design also has a narrow yet rounded toe that gives it a daintier look than the regular silhouette of most combat boots, which is traditionally much wider and subsequently heavier. Though the booties have a lace corseting up the front, we are obsessed with the fact that these shoes also have a zip closure discreetly placed on the inner side to make putting them on a breeze.
This hidden feature takes all of the work out of getting these on and off and nothing makes Us happier than fuss-free dressing. The combat shoes also have a chunky heel just over one inch tall to give the lift we love sans the pain of stilettos. Pretty and practical!
Shoppers who bought and wore these ankle booties raved most about how stylish they look. They also appreciated the easy side zip and the lower price point. One shopper shared she was happy she found these booties since they are a more affordable alternative for a staple shoe. Most reviewers grabbed these boots for themselves but several noted that they made for the perfect gift for their daughters or wives.
Sizes range from 5 to 12 with half sizes included. Although Nordstrom shares that these boots are “true to size,” the majority of shoppers noted that the shoes’ narrow design actually runs small so it is important to eye that size guide and order a half or full size up to secure the most comfortable fit.
Anyone who loves this combat boot style and wants to spice up their wardrobe can snag these BP. booties in an alternate texture, print or color. They are available in plaid, studded and white leather styles.
Check out this version which features red flannel fabric similar to our favorite button-down plaid shirt.

While the black combats make for an easy-to-wear closet staple, this plaid version can be easily worn with a nice mix of clothing in neutral colors. With both styles, we can take a page from Krysten Ritter‘s signature Jessica Jones look and step out with garments like the classic leather moto jacket, a T-shirt and skinny jeans. The look never gets old!
If we ever want to try a dressier look, these ankle booties can be paired with a mididress in a loose silhouette or a shirt dress topped by a blazer or bomber.
We’re seriously stepping up our shoe game for this season and beyond.
