Kerry Washington: "Sex Scenes Are Always Awkward"
Olivia Pope and Fitz have been getting down for four seasons on Scandal, but that doesn’t mean it’s a walk in the park for Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn! The actress, who plays the famous fixer on the hit ABC show, admitted in an interview with Allure magazine that “sex scenes are always awkward.”
“They’re hard to do,” Washington said of her character’s steamy scenes with Goldwyn’s character, married President Fitzgerald Grant. “You’re doing things that you’re supposed to do with only certain people in your life. Because this is not your real partner in life, doing that is awkward. And then doing it in a room full of people is awkward,” she added.

Washington, who is well aware of why fans obsess over Fitz, adds that she remembers to be mindful of Goldwyn’s real-life partner, his wife Jane Musky. “Particularly with a show like ours, where people are so invested in the chemistry, you just learn to be careful, because people’s real relationships in life are important,” she told the mag. “I so respect and admire his wife and him and their family, and he feels the same way about mine. And so you learn to be careful about how you say things.”
The new mom, who stuns on the November cover with minimal makeup, also admitted a secret to being Olivia Pope and it’s all about the shoes!
“There’s a reason why you say, ‘Oh, they walk in this world in a certain way.’ Shoes have a big impact,” Washington said. “Even in rehearsals at Scandal, oftentimes I’ll ask for my shoes. I’ll be standing around in my sweatpants and tank top and hoodie sweatshirt with Christian Dior or Gucci shoes, because I want to be able to walk and stand like Olivia.”
