Mike Fisher's Parents "Excited" He's Marrying Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood has gotten the seal of approval from her future in-laws.

Jim Fisher, father to Mike Fisher, told Canadian paper the Peterborough Examiner that he's "very happy" about his son's just-announced engagement to the country singer.

"Both Karen and I were quite excited," the proud papa says on behalf of himself and the hockey player's mother, Karen. "We're very happy for them."

A rep for Underwood, 26, confirmed her engagement to Fisher, 29, to UsMagazine.com on Monday. The Ottawa Senators player popped the question on Sunday. The super-private couple began dating in autumn of last year.

"We've gotten to know [Underwood] quite well over the last year and she's a great girl," Jim Fisher said. "We just think they make a great couple."

When pressed for details on the wedding planning (reports suggest a summer 2010 bash), the elder Fisher demurred, "They're staying pretty private… They haven't gone into a lot of detail…I can't comment on that… He didn't so I'm not."

One thing that speaks louder than words? Underwood's rock! The singer flashed her brand-new bling in the stands at her fiance's (losing) game against the Boston Bruins in Ottawa Monday night.

The flawless yellow diamond engagement ring was designed by Johnathon Arndt of Johnathon Arndt Gallery of Jewels, a celeb-friendly "invitation only" jeweler. "This ring is a symbol of love from Mike Fisher to Carrie Underwood," the designer said in a statement.
