Ruby Rose Stars in Mesmerizing "Break Free" Film About Gender Roles

Publish date: 2024-06-04

Chances are, before last week you had no idea who Ruby Rose was. The stunningly beautiful Australian model got her big acting break on Season 3 of Orange Is the New Black as Stella, and quickly won the hearts of both Piper (Taylor Schilling) and the viewers who all tuned in to binge-watch this season.

Now Rose’s face is everywhere as her fame grows. But this 29-year-old multi-talented star, who is also a DJ and TV personality, has been hard at work for years, breaking down stereotypes and challenging gender roles with a host of meaningful projects.

For example, in her self-written and produced short film, “Break Free,” Rose transforms from society’s feminine ideal to the male ideal in a mesmerizing performance.

Set to Butterfly Boucher’s song “It Pulls Me Under,” Rose begins the clip dressed like a glamazon with thick blonde hair, heavy makeup, a tight bandage dress, and heels.

Putting on nail polish and applying mascara, Rose looks at herself in the mirror before deciding to chop off her wig to reveal her real short dark hair, that’s shaved on the sides.

Slipping out of her binding dress and into the bathtub, she then begins to scrub away the makeup that was hiding the tattoos covering her body.

Once she takes off her makeup and nail polish, Rose gets to work transforming into a male, complete with false bravado. She even curses and smokes a cigarette to add to the swagger.
