Where Is Toto in The Wiz Live? Twitter Explodes With Reactions

Lost dog! NBC’s The Wiz Live! aired Thursday, Dec. 3, leading to a flurry of responses on Twitter, many of which centered on the absence of Dorothy’s basket-loving pooch, Toto.

Toto appears briefly with Dorothy (Shanice Williams) in the Kansas-set scenes of NBC's live musical production. However, the cairn terrier portraying the beloved canine character was MIA once the proceedings moved to Oz.

According to The Wrap, the explanation goes back to the original Broadway staging of The Wiz. The 1977 theatrical production’s dog trainer was reportedly unable to get the pooch ready for the entire show, so Toto only appeared in Kansas and the final scene.

NBC's live musical production features a star-studded cast, including Queen Latifah as The Wiz, David Alan Grier as The Cowardly Lion, Mary J. Blige as Evilene, and Common as The Bouncer.
